Terrigal Dive News
Autumn 2008

The H.M.A.S. Adelaide made an impromptu visit to Terrigal, on the 28 th January,
just prior to going into Garden Island to begin the stripping process.
Phill Henry EXO gave us the 1 st class guided tour
Fran and I made a visit to the ship at Garden Island and were given some mementos to put up in the Dive Centre here at Terrigal.
So when is the EBT (estimated bottoming time). There is an amazing enthusiasm amongst the Government Departments given the job of preparing her for sinking.
At best EBT could be November, at worst a month or two later.
Work has been going on at a steady pace since the beginning of February. She has not just sat alongside like the Brisbane did.
So this gives us 10 months to get everyone up to a standard where you can relax and enjoy your future diving on her. ( Check out our Adelaide link for more photos in regards to the above. )
Recent Diving
Do you get the impression that the diving has been a bit off since the Pasha Balka came ashore ?? It's not true, there has been startlingly brilliant diving with vis at 30m + at times, masses of fish and warm water, but you have to have been a regular, every weekend, diver to catch those odd occasions. There has been no pattern, good one weekend - everyone gets wound up and excited then it's terrible the next.
Who do we blame ?? global warming ? probably not, the main culprit is Senorita La Nina, she sends the rain but she is fading away and there are signs of normality returning.
It's a 39m dive so you do need plenty of experience before you dive it. One way to gain some expertise as well as experience is to do an Advanced Course which will give you the training and experience for this sort of depth.
What will you need to Dive the Adelaide ?
Around the top of the wreck and generally outside, your open water cert will be ok. If you want to penetrate and also go down to the bottom which could be around 35m if the site is finalised where we think it will be, an advanced certificate would be a good idea. If she is stripped like the Brisbane , there are no areas where you are light locked out but very nearly. Then a more intense wreck diver cert could be advisable.
We will be running all of these types of courses during Autumn and Winter and don't forget these forthcoming months are usually the best for diving so lets make this Autumn and Winter the time to improve your diving skills. As always, our courses are in open water so you will having great dives at the same time
Advanced Certification includes, Deep diving, Boat diving, Decompression diving, all essential for Foggy Cave and will be for inside the Adelaide .
Navigation: this is the depth at which you don't want to get lost
Night or Limited vis diving: all of which could be seen to fit well into the knowledge required to safely dive the Adelaide .
Marine life. A knowledge of what is on the seabed around you can make your diving come alive. If you are into underwater photography as many people are, you need to know just what is filling the viewfinder
SSI has a programme to encourage all recreational divers to aim for the master diver status. Like all SSI programmes this is based around experience. Plus appropriate training.
What is a master diver? It's diver who has at least 50 dives or more under their wt. belt, has done the advanced diver certificate on the way through and has also become a stress rescue diver.
So what do you end up with? A diver who really knows his stuff, is well trained and with a good level of experience but who is not expected and is perhaps not wanting to take on the added role of looking after beginners and the legal hassles this can lead too.
